Overview

The CIGRE, International Council on Large Electric Systems was created in 1921. It regularly regroups a varied community of major actors recognized in the electrical network community. Its objective is to determine best technical and economical conditions in the design and operation of transport networks, and interconnections between factory and nuclear power plant, from which electricity is distributed. For that, competences and knowledge from experts all around the world are set in common during international conferences to exchange on various topics around electrical networks, electricity transmission and distribution.

The Cigré Young Member in France has been created in 2013 by a collaboration between the Gimélec and RTE in order to promote the electrical network and give more information to young students about their theoretical studies and their industrial application to everyday life challenges. Other partners have rapidly joined the movement such as Siemens, EDF, General Electric and SuperGrid Institute.

In France, the Cigré Young Member organizes each year some industrial visits during which experts of the electrical engineering (Engineers, Professors,..) present various aspects of the networks, such as curtailment of electricity or explanations on Gas Insulated Substations. Our members are in charge of the organizations of such events. In addition to that, a national competition is planned every year allowing students to think on innovative topics and challenge themselves on their knowledge by submitting a scientific article. Ten of them are selected to attend to a ceremony during which several experts of the electrical networks (from General Electric, RTE, EDF,..) participate to evaluate their oral session and exchange with the student all day long. It is a great opportunity to create a network!

At the end, the best articles and orals are rewarded.
